According to MLSsoccer.com, former New York Red Bulls head coach Chris Armas has interviewed for the TFC job “multiple times”.

The Reds are in need of a new head coach after Greg Vanney decided not to return following the 2020 MLS season. Vanney is expected to be named the new head coach of the L.A. Galaxy, the announcement coming as early as next week. TFC management reportedly interviewed former French internationals Laurent Blanc and Patrick Vieira for the head coach position, though Blanc accepted the coach job in Qatar a couple of weeks ago.

Armas helped lead the Red Bulls to the 2018 Supporters’ Shield and had a 29W-21L-11D in his time as an MLS head coach. He was an assistant at the club under Jesse Marsch then took over as the head coach when Marsch departed for RB Leipzig during the 2018 season. He parted ways with the Red Bulls in September. Armas was one of MLS’s best-ever defensive midfielders, playing in 264 matches for the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire FC while also earning 66 caps for the US men’s national team and he has a connection with former Red Bulls sporting director and current TFC general manager Ali Curtis.

Under Vanney, TFC captured every major trophy available with the exception of the Concacaf Champions League title. In 2017, Vanney led the Reds to the domestic treble. This season, despite having to play home games in East Hartford because of Canadian COVID-19 quarantine rules, as well as dealing with numerous injuries, Toronto came up just short of winning the Supporters’ Shield and lost in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs to expansion side Nashville SC.

The Reds have a third Designated Player spot open heading into the 2021 season. Team president Bill Manning said the team is looking for an “attacking player” to complement reigning MLS MVP Alejandro Pozuelo.
