After an undefeated season, the St. Andre Bessette Cardinals Sr. girls volleyball team suffered their first loss in the city finals.
On Nov. 4 the Cardinals faced off against Parkland Immanuel Christian in the Metro Athletics Division 4 senior girls city championships. It was a very close game with both teams trading sets back and forth. The game stretched out to a full five sets. The Cardinals came out slow to start the fifth, going down 10 – 1. They battled back hard but were unable to complete the comeback. The final score of the fifth set was 15 – 13.
“They took it really well actually, I thought I would be having to contend with a bunch of tears.” said coach Cameron Keats. “They played well and I think they were proud of what they accomplished this season even though it wasn’t the result we wanted in the last game. Looking back on the season as a whole I think they were very happy with what we accomplished.”
The Cardinals enjoyed a perfect regular season. They finished with nine wins and zero losses, only losing three sets all season.
“We were flying pretty high going into playoffs, said Keats “We were able to get through the first two rounds and we were hoping to get a win there in the finals but just came up a little bit short.”
The team has opted out of challenging for a spot in the 3A provincials.
“I think the whole team deserves a shoutout,” said Keats. “We expected to win that final game. It was disappointing to lose, it’s a tough way to end the season. But looking back at the season overall we’re very happy with what the girls accomplished and how they grew as a team and how they grew individually.”
