Wells leading the way for Corvairs
Article content
Two Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League teams did what few others have been able to do this season – they nearly kept Caledonia Corvairs defenceman Ryan Wells off the scoresheet.
Playing twice last week, the Golden Horseshoe Conference’s Corvairs doubled Thorold 4-2 on the road Thursday before shutting out Hamilton 4-0 in a home win Sunday. Wells was held to just one assist, which he got against Hamilton.
Wells, 20, isn’t Caledonia’s leading scorer – that honour belongs to forward Tyler Burnie, who has 15 goals and 20 assists in 17 games.
However, Wells is right behind with 12 goals and 22 assists in 21 games, which leaves him tied for seventh in league scoring. And, among defencemen, it isn’t even close.
In the three-conference, 26-team GOJHL, Wells is 10 points ahead of two other defencemen in scoring and his three short-handed assists are tied for the league lead. Wells, a former defender with the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads, also has two game-winning goals, which ties him for third among defencemen.
Maybe the most surprising stat is his production during five-on-five play. While his one goal and nine assists with the man advantage are decent stats, his 24 even-strength points would put him in a tie with the two defencemen who are second in scoring.
Despite the fact Wells was held in check the past two games – and Caledonia switched coaches to Mike Bullard from Ric Nattress – the Corvairs showed their depth as others stepped forward.
In the 4-2 win, Danyk Drouin led the way with three assists while Nick Giunta scored twice and Colt Corpse got a goal and an assist. Matthew Bridgwater scored the final goal as Aidan Hughes picked up the win in goal.
Hughes made 28 saves to record the shutout against Hamilton.
Tyler Burnie (2G, 1A) and Nick McHugh (1G, 2A) led the way offensively for Caledonia as Nick Giunta (2A) also picked up a pair of points.
Joel Mazilli scored the final goal.
