Thunder raise $6,131 for Hockey Fights Cancer

Scoreless after two periods Saturday night at the Tillsonburg Kinsmen Memorial Arena, the WOSHL Stratford Fighting Irish scored five times in the third period to defeat the Tillsonburg Thunder 5-0.

The Thunder lost the game but were winners at fundraising by collecting $6,131.30 for Hockey Fights Cancer.

Stratford’s Dylan Buckholz scored the game winner 1:31 into the third. Brodie Smith and Mav Petrie added insurance with short-handed goals before Buckholz scored his second of the night into an empty net with 2:02 remaining. Smith’s second goal made it 5-0 with 1:39 left.

Shots on goal were 12-12 in the first period. Tillsonburg had a 15-9 advantage in the second and Stratford 12-8 in the third.

Saturday’s loss ended Tillsonburg’s four-game winning streak, which included wins over Petrolia (7-6), Dunnville (8-2), Orangeville (9-4) and Delhi (5-4 OT).

Thunder’s Chris McGuffin scored Friday’s winner against Delhi in overtime at the Kinsmen Memorial Arena. Tillsonburg had a 4-1 lead in the third before Delhi roared back to force overtime on goals by Chris Donnelly, Christopher Martin and Luke Sinclair.

Tillsonburg (7-2), tied with Petrolia at the top of the Western Ontario Super Hockey League, travels to Delhi Saturday, Nov. 25 for an 8 p.m. game.
