London Knights goalie Brett Brochu of Tilbury has been invited to Hockey Canada’s national junior team summer development camp.

Fifty-one players, including five goaltenders, were on the roster announced Wednesday. They’ll attend camp July 28 to Aug. 4 at the Tsuut’ina Nation near Calgary.

The camp is part of Hockey Canada’s preparations for the 2022 IIHF world junior championship. The roster includes five players who won silver at the 2021 world juniors.

Brochu, 18, was one of the final cuts from the national junior team selection camp in December for the world junior championship.

He’s 11th among North American goaltenders in the NHL Central Scouting final rankings for the NHL draft being held Friday and Saturday.

He made the 2019-20 OHL all-rookie first team after leading the league with a 2.40 goals-against average. He also had a .919 save percentage, 32-6-0-0 record and two shutouts.

The former Dresden Jr. King spent this season in the American Hockey League with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and made his pro debut in the season finale.

Hawryluk wins Jamieson tour stop

Mat Hawryluk of Chatham won the collegiate men’s division at the Jamieson Junior Golf Tour event Wednesday with a 66 at Essex Golf & Country Club.

Hawryluk’s round included an eagle and five birdies. The Maple City Country Club member posted a seven-stroke win over Essex’s Alex Saroli.

Hawryluk and Saroli are teammates at Wayne State University.

Blenheim’s Aidan Webster of Willow Ridge was sixth with a 76.

Webster leads the overall collegiate standings and Hawryluk is in second place.

Chatham’s Hannah Butzer of Maple City was the runner-up in the junior girls’ division with an 80, three strokes behind winner Kennedy Fremlin of Essex.

Kingsville’s Cale Marontate won the junior boys’ division by three strokes with a 73.

The tour will visit Sutton Creek on Thursday and Maple City on Monday.

Strikers earn point in season opener

The visiting Chatham Strikers tied the Byron Fury 1-1 in Monday’s season opener in the London & Area Women’s Soccer League.

Shelbie Coristine scored in the first half for the Strikers, formerly Chatham FC, but Byron drew even midway through the second half.

The Strikers are in the First Division.
