Delhi Minor Baseball is looking for individuals to volunteer for the season. Everybody is welcome to provide their assistance for the league.

Due to operating through the pandemic, league organizers will be applying their focus to COVID-19 protocols and documentation, requiring volunteers to manage game and off-game duties.

“We’re focusing on development and just getting kids out there, so that they can have not only a summer of physical activity but getting back to social interaction with their friends and just having some fun because kids have been hurt (by the pandemic) the most,”  said Steve Scheers, vice president of Delhi Minor Baseball.

The league is hoping to fill the positions of umpires, coaches and diamond maintenance.

They are looking for high school students who wish to gain their 40 community services hours and anyone who has a general interest in baseball or volunteering.

People who wish to volunteer can join at any time before or during the season.

Umpires will be a paid position.

If insufficient assistance is met, then it will directly impact league development which could lead to fewer games and other potential negative outcomes.

“It’s going to take all hands-on deck, we don’t want to put all this responsibility on one or two people,” said Scheers. “We want to make sure we have everything in place and that we are asking for a little bit more help.”

Each diamond facility will accommodate up to 10 people, including coaches and players to ensure social distancing and small social bubbles.

No spectators will be permitted around the diamond and it’s currently undecided if parents can attend when their children are playing.

During a game or practice, each child is to bring their own chair and place it on their designated mark that will be labeled on the fence to encourage social distancing.

Assigned parking will be mandatory and bleachers will be pulled to the side during each session.

Parents and children are required to fill out a COVID-19 questionnaire before each practice and game on an app.

Practice sessions have been scheduled for this week.

Port Dover Minor baseball has currently established a promising volunteer base. “Being a smaller program, it is imperative to have that good volunteer base to make things run smoothly,” said Port Dover Minor Baseball president, Glenn Tweedie.

“We are looking forward to a fun 2020 season and it’s just great to have the kids back on the field.”

Simcoe Minor Baseball Association has announced house league play will begin this week.

Anyone wishing to volunteer with Delhi Minor Baseball is asked to email president@delhiminorball.com or contact Scheers  at 519-718-4934.
