By that, we mean a regular role in 2021-22 on the Maple Leafs’ blue line for the club’s first-round pick in 2018.

“I feel very confident and comfortable in that job,” Sandin said. “The expectations come a lot from myself as well. I want to just get better and help the team any way I can. I feel like I’ve had a really good summer.”

Sandin’s resume shows 37 NHL games in the past two seasons, as well as five in the playoffs with the Leafs this past May. Consistency and execution will be key for him as camp unfolds.

Coach Sheldon Keefe had some intriguing new looks among his defence pairs on Thursday, including putting Sandin with veteran TJ Brodie and fellow youngster Timothy Liljegren with Jake Muzzin.

Expect those new duos to get a look in pre-season games as well.

“You’re playing against an opponent’s better players (when paired with Brodie or Muzzin), so it just made a lot of sense for me as I was mapping it all out,” Keefe said. “We’re going to try some different things and that is one with those two guys.”
