Golden Hawks drop first two games of OJHL final

The Trenton Golden Hawks find themselves in a 2-0 hole after the first two games of the Ontario Hockey League Buckland Cup championships series with the defending champion Collingwood Blues.

After dropping a tough 5-4 decision to the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s top ranked team Friday in Collingwood, the Golden Hawks were skunked 4-0 in Game 2 on Saturday in Collingwood.

The best-of-seven series shifted back to Trenton Community Gardens for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Wednesday nights, but results weren’t available at press time. If a fifth game is necessary, it will be played Friday at 7 p.m. in Collingwood, with Game 6 back in Trenton Monday at 7:30 p.m., and Game 7 back in Collingwood Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m.

Blues 5, Golden Hawks 4

The Blues wasted little time opening the scoring in Game 1, when Jack Rimmer scored just 41 seconds into the game from Jack Silverman and Spencer Young. They made it 2-0 just 1:30 later when Declan Bowmaster scored from Silverman. The Blues increased their lead to 3-0 at 8:09 of the first period and it looked the Golden Hawks were in for a long night, as Landon Wright scored on the power play from Ryan Cook and Marcus Lougheed.

However, the Golden Hawks stormed back with three straight goals before the period ended to send the teams to the first intermission deadlocked at 3-3.

Lucas Lapalm scored on the power play from Caleb Van de Ven and Adam O’Marra at 8:55. James Jodoin then scored from O’Marra and Ben Pickell at 11:57. Taeo Artichuk tied it from O’Marra and Lapalm at 17:46.

Collingwood reclaimed the lead with the lone goal of the second period when Cameron Eke scored from Dylan Hudon and Calum Chau at 10:09.

The Golden Hawks tied it 4-4 when Lapalm scored from Van de Ven 4:16 into the third period.

However, Lougheed scored the eventual game winner from Rimmer with 3:51 remaining.

Noah Pak stopped 29 of 33 Trenton shots in recording the win, while Benjamin Bonisteel turned aside 30 of 35 Collingwood shots in taking the loss.

Blues 4, Golden Hawks 0

Collingwood was even quicker out of the gate in Game 2 on Saturday, with Silverman scoring from Rimmer and Young just 17 seconds into the game. They made it 2-0 at 15:48 of the first when Eke scored on the power play from Yoiung and Hudon.

After a scoreless second period, the Blues increased their lead to 3-0 when Young scored from Silverman and Rimmer 4:24 into the final stanza. They rounded out the scoring when Rimmer scored an unassisted shorthanded tally at 11:01.

Pak stopped all 23 Trenton shots he faced for the shutout, while Bonisteel turned aside 25 of 29 Collingwood shots in taking the loss.

Junior C

The Clarington Eagles eliminated the Napanee Raiders from the Provincial Jr. C Hockey League playoffs with a 3-2 win Saturday at Napanee’s Strathcona Paper Centre.

The Eagles took a 3-1 series lead with a 2-1 win last Wednesday in Napanee.

Adam Klass opened the scoring for the Eagles just 1:31 into the game when he was set up by Kyle Shepherd. They made it 2-0 when Kolby Poulin scored from Ryan Hall with 1:50 remaining in the first period.

Napanee cut the lead in half with 2:05 remaining in the third period when Andrew Carr scored from Blake Aylesworth and Trent Williams, but that was as close as they would get.

Oliver Webster stopped 33 of 34 Napanee shots for the win, while Logan Vale turned aside 29 of 31 Clarington shots in taking the loss.

In Game 5 last Thursday in Bowmanville, the Raiders staved off elimination with a commanding 5-1 victory.

After a scoreless first period, the Raiders got rolling in the middle frame with three unanswered goals. Reid Lambert scored from Carr just 2:37 into the second, and then Ben White connected from Marshall McFarland and Carter Hartwick at 7:58. Aylesworth made it 3-0 on the power play from Connor Brooks and Michael Patrick at 11:16.

Clarington snapped Vale’s shutout bid 3:35 into the third period when Jordan Shaw scored from Trent Gaylor.

However, Cole Campbell put the game away from Aylesworth and Luke Jarmin at 8:19. McFarland rounded out the scoring with an emoty net marker from Patrick and Cameron Krupa with 1:124 remaining.

Vale stopped 31 of 32 shots for the win, while Webster took the loss, allowing three goals on 21 shots, before giving way to Jude Rondina, who allowed one goal on four shots.

In the series cliniching game on Saturday, Napanee opened the scoring when White scored on the power play from McFarland and Krupa 9:07 into the first period.

Clarington tied it at 16:18 of the first when Kayden Hambley scored from Poulin and Cole Williamson.

Joe Boice scored the lone goal of the second period when he scored from Trevor Urquhart to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Krupa tied it for Napanee from White and McFarland 2:12 into the third period.

However, Shaw scored the series winner unassisted at 9:52.

Webster stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win, while Vale turned aside 24 of 27 shots in taking the loss.

Clarington now takes on the Hanover Barons in the PJHL semi-finals starting Friday in Hanover.
