The veteran defensive back is listed as a starter on the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ depth chart for Friday’s CFL game in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions. Gainey has been sidelined for the last two games with an injured toe.

“We were hopeful that Ed would heal up where he could play,” Riders head coach Craig Dickenson said after Thursday’s walk through at Mosaic Stadium. “We’ve seen a gradual progression where he’s gotten better each and every day. We felt that Day 2 (of practice) was going to be a big day for him. He was able to move, cover and run around full speed. As soon as Ed was healthy that we were going to play him and he’s healthy.”

Left offensive tackle Andrew Lauderdale will miss Friday’s game due to an ankle injury that he suffered in the Riders’ 30-16 win over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday. Lauderdale had started five consecutive games this season. Brett Boyko will start in Lauderdale’s absence.

Boyko said he has been dealing with an undisclosed illness since starting in Saskatchewan’s 33-29 win over the Lions on Aug. 6 at Mosaic Stadium. That was the last start for the Saskatoon product.

“I’m feeling good and back on the mend,” said Boyko, who spent the 2019 season with the Lions before signing with the Riders as a free agent in 2021. “The staff has done a good job of getting me ready and getting my feet under me.”

Also off the active roster and on the one-game injured list is defensive halfback A.J. Hendy (undisclosed). Christian Campbell has been moved from cornerback to defensive halfback to fill in for Hendy.

With Mike Edem (wrist) on the six-game injured list, Loucheiz Purifoy has been moved from defensive halfback to safety.

In other moves, backup quarterback Paxton Lynch has been activated from the one-game injured list. Lynch was placed on the one-game injured list against the Argonauts.

The CFL limits teams to two quarterbacks on the active roster, so it’s unlikely that Lynch will dress on Friday. Cody Fajardo is the starter and his backup remains Isaac Harker.

The Riders and Lions are tied for second place in the West Division with 4-2 records. Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for 8:30 p.m. CST.

The Rider, meanwhile, announced the signing of American defensive lineman Nick Coe.

Coe (6-foot-5, 285 pounds) was initially signed in 2020 as an undrafted free agent by the NFL’s New England Patriots. Coe was released by New England after the pre-season. He then signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent the 2020 season on Miami’s practice roster.

Coe spent four years at Auburn, dressing for 36 games as a defensive lineman and linebacker. He finished his collegiate career with 71 defensive tackles and nine sacks.

Coe will be on the Riders’ suspended list while he completes his COVID-19 quarantine.
