Evelyn worked as a house cleaner before having four children: Beverly, Victor, Paul and Robert. She then worked at Guardian drugstore as a cashier and ice cream scooper and, lastly ,many years in quality control for Hardee Farms in Lambeth.

When asked to what she attributes her long, healthy life, she said, “smoking, drinking and good sex,” followed by a chuckle. She added, “Hard work. I have always worked. Having my family early, that was good. A lot of mistakes, but a lot of good times. I don’t know what I would do over if I could. Probably nothing.”

What keeps her mind sharp? She is an avid card player, reads daily and does the Jumble in the newspaper. She also enjoys Crossword scratch tickets.

Evelyn has 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

Bring back bus stop

For several years, there was a bus stop at the end of my family’s driveway on Fyfe Avenue. It provided me the safety to quickly get to a bus stop and travel the city on public transit.

However, Woodstock Transit has moved the stop to Pavey Street because there is no sidewalk and could potentially pose a safety risk. But the transfer of the stop is now an issue for me and others to carry groceries.

I’m 62 and struggle to carry groceries from that location to my home.

I also told Woodstock Transit there was a significant safety issue at the Athlone stop, just past the Woodstock Hospital, since there was no sidewalk there. It’s not uncommon to leave the bus and have to climb a steep snow bank or tall wet grass to get to an appointment with a physician.

I was told there are more than 200 stops that are considered unsafe and they will be looking to fix. I understand the safety concerns, but I want my stop back because there has never been a safety issue at the former Fyfe Street stop.

Help other kids

The United Nations reports the coronavirus pandemic has impacted 1.6-billion learners globally and will result in 23.8-million children not returning to class at all. I feel for all parents coping with pandemic challenges. And yet, I am grateful:

Grateful my children are now in school.

Grateful our board has the resources to provide computers to those requiring them.

Grateful my children are not needed at home or in the workforce.

Grateful my children don’t rely on meal programs.

I’m asking our prime minister to commit one per cent of Canada’s COVID funding to battle its impact internationally and help children around the world return to school. Let’s be a global leader, leave no one behind, and keep all children in school.
