My apologies as I shall be repeating myself slightly today, all for the good of community happenings this Saturday, Sept. 8th.

Alas, several of my favourite events – plus new interesting events – are all being held on this day! Top of the list is the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association’s 11th annual Wings & Wheels Family Fun Day at Tillsonburg Regional Airport from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The whole family will have a great time. (Imagine that the whole family together!) The wheels involved are classic cars, trucks and who knows what else, for sometimes there are army or rescue vehicles.

You also get to check out the cool local and visiting planes not yet in the air. You will find the airport has some great resident planes we are allowed to gaze at longingly. Also, you will also discover educational displays, the Harvard hangars and planes they are working on, and you will be learning about the history of aviation! (Don’t tell the kids that part.)

There will be food trucks, fundraising activities, silent auction and all kinds of other stuff.

Then it will happen: the roar of the Harvard coming to life and taking off – and you can be in that plane. Trust me, it is a never forgotten thrill to fly in one of these WWII babies! I loved it!

There is no admission fee to Wings & Wheels, but please try and give a good donation as a new engine (which they need) costs tens of thousands of dollars. The rain date is set for Sunday, Sept. 9. (Check www.harvards.com by late afternoon Friday for any decision to postpone to Sunday.)

Now, when was the last time you were at a drive-in movie? You might find some of the cars from the airport cruising over to the Vintage Car Show and Drive-In Movie at C.A.R.S Inc. (7 Rouse St. W, south of the Hwy 3 traffic circle) as it was rained out Aug. 25th. Cars, trucks and all are welcome to come on Sept. 8. The rescheduled car show is from 5-8 p.m. with judging and awards, with the classic movie Grease at dusk. You can watch from your car or bring a lawn char. Drive-in vehicle spots need to be reserved ($10, otherwise it is by donation). There will be food and vendors from 5-8:30 p.m. Please call Annandale National Historic site at 519-842-2294 for more information.

Not interested in cars, planes or movies? How about a nice steak? Tillsonburg Firefighters BBQ is 5-8 p.m. on the 8th at the Community Centre, Lions Auditorium, for $25. For more info message Tillsonburg Fire and Rescue Services’ Facebook page.

There is also a Giant Costume Clearing Sale with Theatre Tillsonburg from 8 a.m. to noon at the Otter Valley Playhouse on Potters Road. Fur coats, wedding dresses, long gowns, men and ladies suits and mega more. Steam Punkers will love it! Halloween is coming and there are great things to put in that dress-up box the kids use. (Do kids do that anymore?)

Robin Barker James, Tillsonburg’s military history hero, passed about three years ago leaving behind a large military collection. On Sept. 8, the barn on the farm will be open with items for sale. I don’t normally write to help an individual, but I will today as Robin did so much for our community and changed the lives of so many students.

The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. – the address and other important information, like cash only, will be found today on Facebook at BARN SALE – Military & Misc., hosted by James Kennedy.

Robin taught history in the classroom and live in the trenches on his farm and needless to say it took a lot of equipment, for not only did he teach about modern wars but also ancient civilizations. The collection includes everything from real artifacts and clothing to plastic weapons, including swords, games and toys. (More than you can imagine.)

You will find artifacts from different eras and countries: uniforms, equipment, a medical kit, ammo boxes and rare items… if you can image something, I think you will find it. Also, dozens of various types of chairs (stacking or folding) which are perfect for churches, community groups, etc. Discounts for those who take whole batches of a certain style.

Robin also built whole villages for the students and when staging his outdoor play The Last Trench Fighter, so you will find many, many tools available.
