Antonio Basco, 63, couldn’t believe his eyes when hundreds of people attended a funeral for his late wife and only relative, after she was murdered in a mass shooting in El Paso. He had assumed he’d have to bury his wife alone but found himself surrounded by people after he put out a call inviting the public to the funeral. It was a story heartwarming enough to restore anyone’s faith in humanity.
Then, the next day, someone stole his car.
“WTF is wrong with people?”, In a now-deleted Facebook post, Vanessa Kondow,a towing dispatcher in El Paso, who wrote that Basco’s car had been stolen and then wrecked Saturday night.
Kondow added that Basco just had the car serviced and repaired before it was stolen and included a picture showing the extent of the damage.
Tow truck driver Eduardo Moreno told KFVS12 that he towed the car back to Basco’s home on Sunday morning for free, after recognizing his name in media reports.
The thieves also made off with a pressure washer from Basco’s trailer, which he used for his car washing business.
Casa Ford and Nissan told ABC-7 that they would help Basco out financially to get him a replacement vehicle.
