Thousands invested in minor hockey through accommodation tax

Championship provided a boost in tourism dollars spent in the city, according to the Timmins Economic Development Corporation

Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau and Mike Kentish from the Municipal Accommodation Tax tourism grant committee presented a cheque on April 19 for $10,000 to the Timmins Minor Hockey Association and Timmins North Stars for the U13AA Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Minor Hockey Championships, which took place April 18 to 21 in Timmins.

The tournament is the culminating event for teams in the Ontario Hockey Federation. Teams from the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario (ALLIANCE), Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA), Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) gathered to crown the North Star, the provincial champions in the U13AA category.

A total of 260 visitors chose to stay in local hotels for three nights, contributing to a boost in tourism dollars spent in the city, according to the Timmins Economic Development Corporation.

The Municipal Accommodation Tax is a 4 per cent fee on travel accommodations in Timmins lasting 30 days or less. The fund is administered by the Timmins Economic Development Corporation to promote and grow the tourism industry in the City of Timmins. Find more information at timminsedc.com/mat-fund/.
