Two Saskatchewan school divisions have reported losses of public money north of $22,000 between September 2022 and November of last year.
A release issued by the Government of Saskatchewan on Friday gave brief details of the school division losses.
Within the Regina Roman Catholic Separate School Division, 12 laptops were stolen, according to the report. The theft is alleged to have occurred on June 13 and Nov. 28, 2023.
“An employee with suspected involvement was terminated from their position. Police and RCMP are investigating. The school division is enhancing physical security protocols for IT asset inventory,” read the report in part.
That loss alone was estimated to be in the neighbourhood of $9,600.
In the Living Sky School Division, which covers parts of northwest central Saskatchewan including the Battlefords, an employee is alleged to have misappropriated $15,152. According to the report the employee was terminated from their position within the division and the matter was reported to the RCMP.
“The school division has increased the frequency of internal audits and is implementing new online software for accepting fees and payments in order to reduce the volume of cash handled in the schools,” read the report.
It alleged this occurred from September to December 2022.
According to the province, the Ministry of Education “has tabled its report to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.”
