The expansion will add approximately 300 new jobs in Winnipeg over the next five years, with an emphasis on technology, operations and creative design.

Neo Financial is endeavouring to reimagine banking for Canadians by making spending and saving “a bit more rewarding.” The company is partnering with over 500 restaurants and retailers in Winnipeg to give shoppers cash-back payment experiences when using Neo. The company also has a no-fee bank account that earns 1.3% interest.

“The opportunity we are going after, and why we are expanding in Winnipeg, is it’s been, I think, 24 years since a new consumer bank has been started in Canada,” Co-founder and CEO of Neo Financial Andrew Chau told the Winnipeg Sun in a phone interview on Tuesday. “So there’s a really unique opportunity to innovate in this space.”

Chau said Winnipeg has a large talent pool, making the expansion particularly exciting. The company receives keys to its Winnipeg offices next month. Neo Financial’s Winnipeg job postings are currently available online.

“I think one of the things we’ve seen with our previous experience in Winnipeg is really the impact that being a part of a fast-growing tech startup can have on a city, but more importantly on individuals,” he said.

Dayna Spiring, president and CEO Economic Development Winnipeg, told the Sun Neo Financial’s Winnipeg expansion is fantastic. She said the move is an endorsement of Winnipeg.

“It speaks loudly to what Winnipeg has to offer in the ecosystem we’ve been able to develop,” she said. “Three hundred highly skilled jobs in a sector of our economy that is continuing to grow and thrive is phenomenal. I look at the pipelines we are filling with our post-secondary education institutions and what the Exchange District is becoming. I’m thrilled. It’s a great statement when people choose to come home.”
