Dave MacKenzie, Oxford’s longtime member of Parliament, will be heading back to Ottawa, representing the riding after his sixth consecutive federal election win Monday night.
“It means a great deal to me. It’s not only me. It’s the people who support me in this riding,” said MacKenzie, speaking to supporters at the Ironworks Kitchen in downtown Woodstock Monday night.
“Having the faith of the people in the county is pretty awesome for me. … I think the community knows me, and I respect them and I think they respect me.”
MacKenzie has long represented Conservatives in the riding, making his first bid for elected office in 1997 under the Progressive Conservative banner before taking office in 2004 as part of the Conservative Party of Canada. He has served in Parliament for 15 years.
MacKenzie was joined on the ballot by five other candidates vying for the Oxford seat, including Melody Aldred for the Christian Heritage Party; Lisa Birtch-Carriere for the Green Party; Matthew Chambers for the NDP; Brendan Knight for the Liberal Party; and Wendy Martin for the People’s Party of Canada.

In Oxford, touted as Canada’s dairy capital, the new NAFTA and supply management were among the riding’s key issues. A bill to ratify the agreement will have to be reintroduced by the new government, and during the campaign some Oxford candidates said the agreement didn’t go far enough to protect Canadian farmers.
