March Break fills up at The Station

Once again, March Break at the Station Arts Centre sold out for its youth programming.
“Every year we do a different theme,” said Tabitha Verbuyst last Wednesday during March Break. “We try to use themes that we haven’t covered before in summer camps or PA Day programs. Over the last few days they did a Gamer Day, all based on video games, today they’re doing spring crafts. I believe they’re going to have a St. Patrick’s Day and Mad Science Day.
“They do different activities and crafts based on that theme, or it might be a game, or on Mad Science Day it might be an experiment so they’re little scientists. Today, they’ve got some wonderful birds nests that they made out of yarn. And they’ve got these spinning art themes for abstract flowers – it’s a technique we started doing at the Creative Imagination Festival (Turtlefest). They use salad spinners – they pour paint into it and spin it fast – so the kids really like it.”
In a side room, their creative clay creations were drying.
“Today, I think the consensus was unicorns, but…” Verbuyst laughed, “they were doing spring creatures. So some chipmunks, a lot of unicorns, bears…”
Materials are supplied by Station Arts and the children, ages 4-11, only have to bring their lunches.
“We usually sell out, and over sell sometimes. If we get a lot of volunteers we can overfill a little bit, so that’s always good. The kids have a blast.”
Many of the youth are regulars at the Station Arts, attending the March Break, PA Day and summer programs, said Verbuyst.
“We lucked out this week because they can get outside, too, and get some fresh air. There’s a big green space by the red caboose.”
The next PA Day program is in April, and there will be two in June.
“From there our summer programs (ages 4-8 and 9-12) will launch right after Canada Day. They fill up quick too.”

Painters and Potters
The current exhibit at St. Arts Centre is Painters and Potters, which Verbuyst is involved with as an artist. It runs until April 6 at 41 Bridge Street West.
Verbuyst is exhibiting ‘Twilight Symphony’, a rainy night view of Broadway in Tillsonburg, part of a themed collection she is working on, which includes a half-dozen currently on display in Woodstock.
“I’m doing a large one that is 5-feet by 3-feet, so it will be 8-9 all together and I’m hoping to have 11-12…”
