“Today is an exciting day for Tillsonburg and Oxford County,” said Larry Martin, Oxford County Warden Sunday afternoon. “Transportation investments have traditionally focused on roads and bridges, but the focus is shifting to include trails, bike lanes, greenways as key components of sustainable transportation networks and central to a community’s wellbeing. By design, trails connect people and communities offering safe routes for active transportation. Choosing active transportation enhances personal health and ultimately the health of our communities.

“Trails offer residents a safe, attractive, accessible place to walk, cycle, hike, jog and skate,” said Martin. “This initiative perfectly aligns with the objectives of the Future Oxford Community Sustainability Plan.”

“We try to promote the use of trails, the development of trails, and we hope that people get out and use them,” said Dan Molinaro from the Oxford County Trails Council. “We want people to get into a healthy lifestyle and that can be done by hiking, biking, running, using the trails, getting off the roads and doing the things that are better for all of us.

“Today we’re hoping everyone will enjoy this new part of the Tillsonburg Rail Trail.”

Rick Cox, Director or Recreation, Culture and Parks for the Town of Tillsonburg, thanked the sponsors of Tillsonburg Trail Festival, including Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Home, the Trans Canada Trail, Tillsonburg Lions Club for supporting the tree planting events, part of Keep Tillsonburg Beautiful (32 trees and a section of prairie grass), and Knights of Columbus who sponsored a pizza lunch, and Station Arts Centre and the craft and face painting tables.

Sunday’s festival included guided trail walks by Otter Valley Naturalists, the trail cleanup by members of the community and local Scouting and Guiding groups, a raptor display, tree planting funded by the Tillsonburg Lions Club and coordinated by the LPRCA, and a display by the Norfolk Equestrian Trail Riding Association.

“Enjoy your day on this part of the Trans Canada Trail here in Tillsonburg,” said Cox. “We invite you to explore all of the great trails here in Tillsonburg and throughout Oxford County.”
