H-N resident dies after contracting COVID-19

A resident of Haldimand Norfolk has died after contracting the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The person died at West Haldimand Hospital in Hagersville on Thursday, the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit said in a media release late Friday night.
The individual formerly resided in an area retirement home.
No further details about the person were released.
“I’m saddened to learn of this loss of life due to COVID-19,” Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, Medical Officer of Health, said in the release. “This underscores the importance of continued vigilance in the face of this virus, and the necessity of assertive actions such as self-isolation and social distancing.”
Five other people in the two counties have tested positive for COVID-19. Further details were not released, but the health unit stated a public health management plan has been initiated that includes placing the residents of the affected institution in isolation. Close contacts of the people will be managed by the health unit.
The health unit announced the first positive case in the area on Wednesday. That individual was showing mils symptoms and was in isolation at their home.
Haldimand County also confirmed a first responder employed by the municipality tested positive for the pathogen. Haldimand reported the employee does not reside in the county and that the presence of the virus was confirmed outside the municipality as well.
