The election was initially slated for May 27. Thursday, Norfolk County announced that the date for counting ballots has been pushed back a week to June 3.

In a news release, Norfolk County says the clerk’s department made the adjustment “to ensure COVID-19 public-health guidelines were met for the safety of all Ward 2 residents while maintaining the integrity and transparency of the by-election.”

Due to the pandemic, it will not be business-as-usual on election day. There will be no in-person voting. Instead, all Ward 2 electors will receive mail-in ballots to fill out and return to the clerk’s department. The ballots will be mailed to affected households in the second week of May.

Completed ballots should be mailed back to the county by May 25 or dropped off at designated locations from May 20 to June 3.

Electors who received a voter’s card for the 2018 municipal election are expected to be on the voter’s list for this byelection.

Those who have not received a vote-by-mail kit by May 18 or who require confirmation they are on the voters list are encouraged to contact the clerk’s department at clerks@norfolkcounty.ca or 519-426-5870 ext. 6269.

Norfolk council called the byelection earlier this year following the retirement in December of municipal veteran Roger Geysens. Six candidates registered by the April 12 deadline. They are Bill DenDekker, Linda Vandendriessche, David VanHamme, Noel Haydt, Pamela Moore, and Russell Colebrook.

Additional information on the by-election, voting process, and alternative ballot-return locations is available at norfolkcounty.ca/2021-ward-2-by-election.
