Port Dover artist enjoys 'third profession'

It was a good weekend for Wayne Roberts and his “third profession.”
Roberts was one of 16 artists to participate in Open Studios Port Dover. As the two-day event came to a close Sunday afternoon, the 80-year-old was quite pleased with the results.
“Saturday was an especially good day,” Roberts, who creates stained glass, said. “We sold a lot of pieces – 30 in total and that makes this one of our best years ever.
“We had a lot of people come by and with all of those sales, I’ve cleared up some space to create more pieces.”
Although Roberts couldn’t provide an exact date, he said he began working in stained glass six to eight years ago.
“This is my third profession,” Roberts said. “I was a mechanic for 30 years, I owned a garage and when I retired I took up woodworking.
“But the plywood got a little too heavy and so I started looking around for something else to do and got into stained glass.”
Roberts received some training and then started working on his own in his shop on Sunninghill Drive. Some of the pieces that were still available on Sunday included several colorful birds, a lighthouse and a tall Blue Heron.
One of his creations not for sale was a six-frame project that captures an entire day from sunrise to sunset. That colorful piece of work is part of a porch covering in the backyard of the home he shares with his wife Sherry.
On some days Roberts will spend as much as five hours a day in his studio, which is heated to allow him to work year-round.
“I don’t know,” he said when asked about working in stained glass. “It’s something I enjoy and that’s probably because it’s relaxing.”
Formally known as the Art Studio Tour, the event gives people an opportunity to meet Port Dover artists in their creative spaces.
Paintings, carvings, photography and pottery were also available to view and purchase as part of the tour.
