Looking to head off potential losses in key markets like Europe and Japan, Hensall District Co-op has decided it will no longer allow the use of glyphosate as a dry bean pre-harvest dessicant.
HDC commercial business manager Derwyn Hodgins told growers at a dry bean field day near Exeter that the move comes in response to growing consumer opposition, more and more stringent testing by importing markets, and the growth of the dry bean industry in non-traditional markets like Ethiopia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
He also said there was growing unease about the huge payouts being awarded by juries in U.S. glyphosate lawsuits. Currently there are 13,000 lawsuits pending. “We think this is the right move for our industry.”
Eragon plus Merge will now be the approved dessicant for all market classes, except for adzukis, where the use of glyphosate will still be permitted, Hodgins said.
