Local A&W awards two $1,000 scholarships

Back to school just got a little easier for two Tillsonburg students who work at the local A&W restaurant.

Tina Friesen and Ashton Fehr were each recently awarded a scholarship of $1,000 to put towards their post-secondary education.

The scholarships are two of five that were awarded this year by the franchise owners of a group of eight A&W locations, and go to student employees who combine excellence in academics, work and community involvement.

"This is the first year we've offered them," said Steven Will, A&W franchisee in Tillsonburg, Owen Sound, Mount Forest, Hanover, Dunnville, Exeter, Ingersoll and Simcoe.

"All of the employees in the eight restaurants were eligible. It's intended for any kind of post secondary education, so it could be university, college, apprenticeship, whatever. And it's intended for staff members who successfully balance the challenges of having a part-time job with the rigors of school, as well as involvement in the community.

"I'm a big believer in post secondary education, I know the struggles my sons went through, working hard and getting the money to go off to university. We thought it was a great way to reward the folks who are working really hard for us, and you never know, it may also help us attract the really bright students to become part of our team, too."
