Tillsonburg's Canada 150 flag

A large 12x24 foot Canadian flag was front and centre Monday night in the Tillsonburg Council chamber.

Acquired by Jami Stephenson, chair of Tillsonburg's Canada 150 Committee, the flag was signed by Town Council, and visitors to Monday night's council meeting.

Through the remaining months of Canada's 150th Anniversary, the goal is to have as many members of the community sign the flag. It will be displayed at the Annandale National Historic Site, and at community events around town to make it available to the public.

"Everyone seems to be in favour of supporting this, making sure it gets out to the events and have everyone signing it," said Stephenson, who got the idea after attending a heritage meeting in Norfolk County.

"They talked about the flag they got and I thought, 'Yeah, you know what, I think Tillsonburg - in our 150th year - that's something we should get. It is a big year and we know a lot of people might go away (on July 1), we want to get it to all the events so that people can sign, so you don't necessarily have to stay in Tillsonburg, you can still go on your trip - but still sign the flag.

"We're hoping our community leaders will take the flag to events they go to. It is large, but not too heavy. So we'll put it out and hopefully a lot of people can sign it."

If you haven't signed it by July 1st, it will be prominently displayed at Tillsonburg's Canada Day celebrations, ready to be signed.

"Tonight, Council is the first to sign it. We thought it was appropriate for them to sign it, and we brought our Community Leaders here as well."

The special guests - Canada 150 Community Leaders and Canada 150 Committee members - included Virginia Armstrong, Heather Cnockaert, Wendy Cameron, Mariana Carson, Tabitha Dalm, Paul Weaver, Evan VanMoerkerke, and more.
