Rash of break and enters

Tools, laptop stolen in Springford

The Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police responded to a break and enter reported on Saturday, April 8.

The break and enter occurred on Main Street near the intersection of County Road 13 in Springford, Norwich Township. The theft occurred between Thursday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 8 at 12:30 p.m.

The suspect(s) gained entry by prying open a rear locked door at the residence. Items taken included various hand tools and laptop with an approximate value of $1,500.

List of items stolen: Dell Inspiron laptop - grey; Dewalt cordless 20 volt drill; Dewalt hammer drill; Dewalt impact driver; Dewalt skil saw; and Makita drill.

The incident remains under investigation.

The OPP is asking residents to be vigilant in recognizing suspicious people or vehicles that are in your neighborhoods. It is important for this information to get to police when the suspects may still be in the area.

Rash of break and enters in Tillsonburg

The Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to several reports of break and enters which occurred overnight between Tuesday, April 4, and Wednesday, April 5, in Tillsonburg.

The break and enters occurred on Potters Road, Earle Street, Oak Street and Eleanor Court area. In total 10 separate incidents were reported, with various items taken from backyard sheds and in one case a detached shop on the property.

Items that were taken included various hand tools and outdoor equipment. Some of the stolen items were located by police when they searched the surrounding bushes and property lines.

Police would like to remind homeowners in those areas to check their out buildings and sheds to ensure they have not been a victim as well. Anyone who has not reported a related property crime is asked to contact the OPP.

$16,000 theft of scrap metal, tools in Courtland area

The Ontario Provincial Police Norfolk County Detachment is reminding the public to protect their property and valuables against would be thieves after receiving a report of a theft from a Norfolk County Road 13, Middleton address.

On Wednesday, April 5, at approximately 3:18 p.m. police received a call from an employee of Hercs Trucking reporting a theft.

Through the course of investigation, it has been determined that between 1-3 a.m., unknowns removed approximately six skids of scrap metal. Unknowns also entered four unlocked trucks located on the property and removed a quantity of tools.

The theft is estimated at approximately $16,000.

The OPP would like to remind all community residents that if they see suspicious persons or vehicles, try to obtain as much detail as you can, write down the person(s) description, the type of vehicle they are driving and the licence plate number.

Then don't delay, call the police and report it. 1 - 888 - 310 - 1122 will put you in contact with the nearest O.P.P. Communications Centre to report the activity. *OPP (*677) on your cellular will also work.

Police arrest two suspects in Salford cheese theft

The Ontario Provincial Police Oxford County detachment investigated a break and enter at the Village Cheese Mill in Salford, South West Oxford Township, on Tuesday, February 21.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that between Monday, February 20 and Tuesday, February 21, unknowns forcibly gained entry into the business. Once inside, unknowns entered a walk-in cooler and removed a large quantity of cheese, then removed a large quantity of Canadian currency from the front of the store along with several DVDs, fudge, meat sticks, maple syrup, shortbread, garbage tags, chocolate bars, stamps, international books, pre-stamped envelopes and Marilyn Monroe stamps. The theft was valued at approximately $6,200.

OPP advise that two suspects have been arrested and charged with this incident and a previous break-in at the same location on December 27, 2016. Charged with the following Criminal Code offences are:

Robert Mackenzie, 49, London, Ont. has been charged with Break and Enter (2 counts); and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime - Over $5,000. Amy Smith, 40, of London, Ont., was charged with Break and Enter (2 counts); Possession of Property Obtained by Crime - Over $5,000; and Fail to Comply with a Probation Order (2 counts).

Both parties were held in custody pending bail hearings.

1 or 2 seconds can save lives

The Ontario Provincial Police Norfolk County Detachment is reminding all car/truck operators of the importance in sharing the roadway and looking out for motorcycle operators.

As the nicer weather approaches we will see a higher number of motorcyclists and bicyclists on the roadways. Vehicle operators are encouraged to check their mirrors frequently in order to be more aware of activity around their vehicle. This simple safety skill, while driving, will help to prevent unnecessary collisions and increase road safety for all motorists.

Before entering into an intersection or changing lanes, always take an extra second to look both ways and check for other vehicles including motorcycles.

"Taking an extra second or two can and does save lives," said Constable Ed Sanchuk, Norfolk County OPP, in a media release.

Constable Sanchuk's Top 10 Road Safety Tips

1. Drive sober.

2. Wear your seat belt.

3. Avoid all distractions.

4. Obey all the rules / laws.

5. Drive defensive.

6. Check your mirrors regularly.

7. Lights on for safety.

8. Watch for children.

9. Watch for cyclists.

10. Watch for motorcyclists.

"Safety does not happen by accident, so please ensure that you focus 100 per cent of your attention to your driving abilities. This simple skill will help to prevent unnecessary collisions and increase road safety for all motorists," said Inspector Zvonko Horvat, Norfolk County OPP Detachment Commander.
