March is championship month for curlers not just here in Tillsonburg but throughout the nation and even the world.

Last weekend, Ontario’s Rachel Homan and her team won the Scott Tournament of Hearts and the honour of representing Canada at the World Women’s Championship in Beijing later this month.

As I write this, the Tim Hortons Brier has started in St. John, Nfld with a very strong field of competitors. As with the women’s rep, I’m sure that whichever team makes it through to win the Brier will be a great representative for our country. Even though most Canadians have a certain loyalty to their provincial team I’m sure we all would be happy to see Brad Gushue and his rink finally win that coveted Brier title in their home province and get to wear the maple leaf at the Worlds.

Our local club leagues are all into championship mode as well with March the final month of our curling season. I was a little concerned when we had that spell of unseasonably warm weather in February that curlers would lose their ‘curling’ focus and start looking to the garden or the golf course! The return to below 0 temperatures has reassured me that we’ll keep our curlers in the club a little longer!

Our Glendale High School Boys Curling team won the TVRA South East Championship in a back and forth game which came down to a last-rock, 8th end nail-biter draw thrown by skip Levi Hiscock to catch enough of the button to win the game. The Gemini team moved on to WOSSAA Monday with the hope of winning and returning to OFSAA.

Recently the club hosted the 5th Crompton Home Hardware and Building Centre Men's Open Bonspiel with 16 teams taking part. Among those teams were four local teams skipped by Randy DeClercq, Paul Belcher, Les Peter and Brian Stephenson. The Walsh team of St. Thomas CC finished with high points on the first draw, but Travis Fanset and his team from the Ingersoll Curling Club out-distanced all teams earning the overall high point total to take the Crompton Trophy.

Along with major sponsor Cromptons, bonspiel chair Walt Kleer wanted to recognize and thank other local businesses like Inovata Foods, Tillsonburg Metro and Railway City Brewing who contributed to the success of the bonspiel.

Lux Salon and Spa sponsored the final Ladies afternoon draw won by Nora Peter and her team of Dorell Clark, Tracy Kloepfer-Court and Marilynn Smith. The evening ladies last draw sponsored by Autoneum Canada was won by Betty Tull, Dorell Clark, Cindy Leuszler, and Marilyn Smith. Thanks to all the ladies who supplied the end of draw goodies for these draws.

Good luck and good curling to all teams in your club trophy championship round. See you on the ice!
