I think I have been watching too much Trump

The constant coverage, discussions, controversies, deceptions and fabrications have done something to my brain. I seem to be noticing so many more disturbing or annoying things going on in our society that ever bothered me before. It is just not on TV but in real life.

We all know people lie. They always have and likely always will. People did on the sly, behind the scenes, in private. There seems to be folks who believe if you just keep saying an untruth over and over, and make others repeat and defend the lie, it will eventually be true. Or at least more people will start believing it. I guess that’s a good ploy and it does likely work for some. Lying has been taken out of the shadows and given acceptability.

So much so it has been given its own words. The word for 2016 was “post truth” which is “an adjective defined as relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotions and personal belief.” It’s a mouthful, which means the truth and/or facts don’t matter.

Lately we have included “alternative truth,” which as yet has not been defined but will most likely reach the level of being in a dictionary at some point. You are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. All this duplicity will be very destructive and damaging to our civilization.

There are a lot of little, insignificant things that are also annoying to me.

Kids don’t grow up these days, they are adulting. I just heard on the radio a couple days ago there is now a school where you can send your teenagers, for a price, to learn how to become an adult. I guess that is adulting. We just grew up listening to our parents and teachers, or not, and figuring it out as we went along. Well, I know some people who will grow up and become an adult, but I don’t think they would benefit from a class.

Can we quit the “I heart” everything and making little hearts with your hands? It is no longer cute already.

Can we stop saying I love you to everyone on the planet. It’s an emotion that should be limited to a very select few and by throwing out that phrase without discrimination destroys the meaning. And that includes the heart hands which is representative of the amorous sentiment.

Pets are not family. They are an important part and often a necessary part in the life of some people, to be sure, but they have not nor will they ever take on the human qualities needed to be family. I acknowledge some may feel closer to their dog than their relatives but that does not make them family.

Your children are not your best friends, especially very small children. A best friend has a very significant position in your life but it will never and should never reach the level of connection you have with a child. Each has a special position and should never be confused or combined. It lessens the value of each.

I am so sick of hearing “branding.” People are not brands. Style, clothing, behaviour and lifestyle might enhance a brand. A person may give a boost to a brand by their actions. Trump is not a brand. His name on hotels, golf courses, casinos, wine, ties, beef or university might be a brand, but as a person he is not a brand. He may destroy his brand by his behaviour, actions and attitude.

Maybe I am just getting too old. Or I need a holiday.
