Tillsonburg Remembers

Article content

Tillsonburg Military History Club has a special exhibit on display at the Station Arts Centre for Remembrance Week.

The exhibit, which brings awareness and respect to the memory of those in the military who served and protected, features commemorative boards to World War I's Oxford 168th (purchased by the military history club from the Woodstock museum), posters, artifacts, enlistment records, and short bios of men who died in the two World Wars from Tillsonburg, including collections from Randy Wallace, Jerry Turner, and club president Justin Carpani.

Drop by the Station Ats Centre, open weekdays 9-4 and 9-2 on Saturday. The exhibit comes down on the Monday following Remembrance Day.

"This year I produced a pamphlet, Tillsonburg Remembers, dealing with Tillsonburg soldiers who died in 1916," said Turner. "Military History Club members will be handing them out to people Friday before the Silent Walk (10:30 a.m.) and at the cenotaph (10:45 a.m.). They are also on a table at the Station Arts Centre by the cenotaph pictures."

The Tillsonburg Military History Club, which meets on the last Tuesday of the month at the Tillsonburg Legion (upstairs), currently has 20-22 members who regularly attend meetings.

"We're down a bit, but we're still functioning," said Turner, noting they peaked at 35 members since forming in 2007.

New members are always welcome, said Turner, noting all relevant information is available at www.militaryhistoryclub.ca and at their Station Arts Centre exhibit.

"We meet at the Legion now the last Tuesday of the month.

"Two weeks ago a bunch of us went out to a guy's place to take a ride in his tank... just up the road from here. But usually we try to have guest speakers. And we have videos when we can't get a guest speaker."
