Next month will be the time to show recognition for locally grown food.
On Oct. 14, the SCOR Economic Development Corporation (EDC) will host Local Food Recognition Day to help recognize and honour local food heroes in Oxford County, Brant County, Elgin County, Middlesex County and Norfolk County.
Awards will also be handed out to nominees in categories including not-for-profit, government workers, youth, educators, restaurants and businesses, farmers, as well as an award for regional impact.
Anyone can nominate any person in one of these fields, they just need to email email@example.com with a short description of who they are and why they deserve to be nominated and what work they have been doing. All nominations have to be in by Oct. 7 before noon.
The event will also be where SCOR will announce its funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which will be used to support SCOR’s FoodHub project.
Nicole VanQuaethem said they received $193,000 over two years from the foundation.
“Our SCOR FoodHub targets small to midsize producers in the five-county area,” she said. “The reason why we focus on small to midsized producers is because they don’t have as good access to certain markets, such as the broader public sector. So we’re focused on hospitals, schools and long-term care facilities because they have steady and reliable contracts.”
VanQuaethem said that Local Food Recognition Day is important because there is so much work being done in Oxford County and the other four counties and sometimes these people and organizations can go unnoticed.
“They might not be the type that want to brag about what they’re doing and I think it’s really important to recognize all of the hard work that these people do,” she said. “Whether they’re farmers, serving local food or they’re not-for-profits, they’re all doing unique things.”
The event is completely free and will take place at the SCOR EDC office in Tillsonburg. People can register online at www.eventbrite.ca/e/local-food-recognition-day-tickets-27573536189.
