It’s a big year for the Oxford Winds Community Concert Band.

“Our new season is incredibly special,” explained music director Stephanie Riehl. “This will be our 20th anniversary as a performance group, and it just happens to coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday. We have some exciting plans for the coming year and sincerely hope local wind and percussion musicians, whether seasoned or aspiring, will join us.”

The band will mark Christmas with a holiday concert in November and in the spring will celebrate both anniversaries with a May concert, featuring Canadian composers and Canadian popular music.

“We want to see if we can get a lot of people out for that,” Riehl said.

The Oxford Winds Community Concert Band consists of three bands of various skill levels including The Oxford Winds, Oxford Breeze and Senior Winds, who perform two concerts a year.

They also regularly perform at community events and local businesses.

Riehl, who has been music director for 11 years, said she appreciates that Oxford Winds for being “an enthusiastic and dedicated group of musicians.”

“We have a great group of musical volunteers and board of directors,” she said. “We are really community-oriented. We are based in Oxford County and most of our members are from Oxford County.”

A special registration and information night for potential members will be held on September 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Southside Park.

A second registration will take place in conjunction with the first rehearsal of the season on September 15 at College Avenue Secondary School from 6 to 7 p.m.
