Courtland Lions donate $10,000 to TDMH Foundation

The Courtland Lions Club recently donated $10,000 to the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation in memory of Ron Knechtel.

"He (Knechtel) left some of his money, from his will, to the Lions Club," said Courtland Lions Club treasurer Roger Geysens. "One of the things that was in his will was that the Lions use the money for the benefit of the community, and this is what we came up with."

In addition to the donation to the TDMH Foundation on March 21, the Courtland Lions, who had received the money earlier this year, also donated $10,000 to the Delhi Community Health Centre and $10,000 to Norfolk General Hospital.

"We're still looking at some additional projects," said Geysens. "We do still have some additional money and we'll see what we can come up with.

"We thought this was something we wanted to get out right away, and the local hospitals and health centre that they will look at it as a donation from the Lions Club, but in memory of Ron Knechtel. We want him to get some recognition."

TDMH Foundation executive director Dave Corner attended the Lions Club meeting to accept the 'Light Up Your Limbs' donation, and explained how – and why – the hospital is re-developing its largest X-Ray suite.

"With the new technology... the image will appear onscreen before the technician takes the photo," said Corner. "They can check it, and instantly do it again if necessary. So the processing time is faster, the image is HD, so much better for the radiologist. It also lessens exposure to radiation."

The equipment was expected to begin set up within 'the next couple of weeks' after the March 21st Lions meeting, and would take about four weeks.

"We really do appreciate the Courtland District Lions Club being part of this. We will have reached our goal probably by the end of this month (March)... which is the end of our fiscal year. We will have raised the $450,000 that we needed to help the hospital with this redevelopment."

The Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation has been in existence for 34 years, and in the past six years they have passed over about $4 million to the hospital, which helped purchase items like the new digital mammography equipment.

"And the reason we've been able to do it is because of people like you," Corner said to the Courtland Lions. "In some cases raising the money, in some cases receiving it like we do, and finding it in your hearts to be able to pass that on to us."
