I’ve only been living here at Harvest Community Living a couple of weeks, but it feels like home. The staff treat us with greatest respect, always ready to help. I call them angels. On Wednesday mornings we can go to a kinesiotherapy session to tone up our long muscles. I couldn’t believe how many ways one can use a stretchy band of rubber or a rubber ball to build muscles.

On Wednesday night a keyboardist player from London entertained us in the theatre. His name is Joel Horvath, from London. We were invited to sing along which I did, modestly, of course. There were little tables set between seats to set a beverage on. I couldn’t reach one, ended up with a paper napkin on my knee and a cup of fruit juice in one hand, and a cookie in the other. Made it necessary to shout bravo for a lively number. Joel accepted that.

Joel acknowledged that with a smile. In fact he had a smile on his face during every number. He loved what he was doing. I felt lucky to recognize Lara’s theme.

I didn’t know the show was open to friends and relatives for free.

Do you remember how icy it was on that Wednesday? Highways were closed due to accidents, a bad one east of Woodstock closed the 401. After the performance I tried to persuade Joel to stay in Tillsonburg for the night. I asked what kind of tires had. He evaded that by saying he had a four wheel drive. He said he’d take it slow. I said what about the other guy?

A woman sitting beside me in the theatre told me Gerald Taylor has moved to Tillsonburg. I didn’t recognize her, and was embarrassed to find out it was Evelyn who sits at the next table to me at meals. Evelyn’s husband was post master in Tillsonburg for many years. Ken owned 15 acres of land and ran a lively farming business on it after he retired.

Liz Ball, my backdoor neighbour from Straffordville is living here. At the table I use, Joe Shaefer, uncle of Matty who lives just across the abandoned railway from my old home.

It seems we spend much of each day in the dining room, breakfast at 7 a.m. lunch at five to 12 p.m., and supper at five to 6 p.m. Friendly people come to our table with choices of food and drink. Mmm!

On Saturdays I have free use of the laundry right beside my apartment door.

If you need a place to live these days of later life, don’t hesitate to choose Harvest Retirement Community.
