Committee behind International Women's Day event is encouraging residents to nominate inspiring women for the AppreSHEation Award

She could be a tireless canvasser or fundraiser for charity.

Maybe she mentors up-and-coming women in her line of work.

Perhaps she created a support group – formal or informal – for a group of women.

The AppreSHEation Award is a way to acknowledge women who have changed the lives of other Oxford women.

“There are so many women in Oxford County that use their skills to enhance the lives of other women, and enhance their status,” said Phyl McCrum, a member of the International Women’s Day committee in Oxford, which runs the AppreSHEation Award.

The award began seven years ago and has since been awarded to an equal split of groups and individual women. Previous winners include Survivors Voices, the Zonta Club of Woodstock, and Tracey Kaiman, the woman behind Belle of the Ball.

“It gets women and men thinking about the women in the community and what they are doing,” McCrum said.

Sue Barg, another committee member, said the award highlights women working at the grassroots level – dedicated people that don’t always get the credit they deserve.

“It’s nice to be acknowledged for the work that you do. A lot of the people who are nominated are not always necessarily people in the public eye. It’s someone’s mom or someone’s wife or someone’s best friend,” she said.

“It acknowledges the unpaid work,” added McCrum.

Generally there are about half a dozen nominations for the award. This year the committee is extending the deadline, moving it from Feb. 12 to Feb. 16 at 8 a.m.

“When I notify people that they’ve been nominated, most of the time they’re shocked and thrilled to have been nominated. It gives you warm fuzzies,” Barg said.

Barg, McCrum and their fellow committee members judge the nominations and present the award on International Women's Day. They’re looking for women or groups that have stepped up to be community leaders, made a difference in women’s lives, led an advocacy campaign and inspired change, or helped to carve out safe spaces for women.

“(It’s) people who are going and making a difference because that’s just what they do,” said Barg.
