Silver Spokes Cycling Club donates bikes

The Silver Spokes Cycling Club recently sponsored five new bikes for Little Brothers and Little Sisters in Tillsonburg.

Several Silver Spokes members met with the children at Canadian Tire in Tillsonburg Friday, August 21st to pick out their bikes.

"We're always trying to promote cycling and safety in the community," said Silver Spokes president Megan Vankerrebroeck, noting the importance of sharing the road. "We want to get kids active, get kids riding their bikes.

"Last summer we did fundraising events and we donated five bikes to 'Big' and 'Littles' in Simcoe. We had some money left over, and we added a little bit more to it. We thought 'we're going to come to Tillsonburg this year' and donate some bikes because we have members from Tillsonburg, Delhi, Norwich, Simcoe, Port Dover..."

The Silver Spokes contacted Deb Landon from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and Area and five children were selected to receive bikes.

"They pick them (the bikes) with our help," said Vankerrebroeck, noting children sometimes put more emphasis on colour rather than practicality. "A bike they'll be able to ride next summer for sure, too. Children are always outgrowing their bikes, so we want something that fits and easy to ride."

The Silver Spokes currently have about 100 members.

"We don't all ride together, obviously," said Vankerrebroeck. "But we have a ride almost every day of the week – a different type of ride for the different abilities."
