Michele and Dale Docker, owners of Andy's Drive-In, celebrated winning 3M Canada's (Scotch-Brite) national Griddle Giveaway contest on Feb. 1 by hosting Griddles and Grills on Monday, August 3.
"We won a flat-tip griddle," said Michele, wearing her Andy's Drive-In apron. "As part of the prize, they (3M Canada) donated $1,000 to a charity of our choice. And from 2-5 p.m. today, an extra dollar from every burger purchased will also be donated. We decided to throw in a classic car show to boot."
The Dockers' charity of choice was Camp Trillium, near Waterford, a childhood cancer support camp providing recreational programs for children with cancer and their families.
"We wanted to give back to the community that gives this restaurant so much – it's been a pleasure to partner with 3M to support our friends, family and customers who benefit from Camp Trillium," she said.
"It's been non-stop today."
The final burger tally was 288, which raised 3M Canada's donation to Camp Trillium to $1,288. Andy’s Drive-In (Michele and Dale), along with help from the Raffle Table and Donation Jar, will be donating an additional $800 to Camp Trillium.
"Andy's Drive-In is a wonderful winner that proudly serves its community," said Tracy Lezizidis, Strategic Marketing Manager, 3M Canada, in a media release. "I'm thrilled the griddle has a home in this deserving diner and will be part of its long legacy of success."
Winners from the raffle draw are: Ed Erdelac - 3M Basket; Dave Leighfield - Coke Mini Fridge; and Kerry Tye - Andy’s Drive-In Basket.
Their new flat-top industrial griddle (Garland Kitchen Griddle valued at $4,000) will be put to good use next season. "Setting that up is this winter's project."
Michele and Dale bought Andy's Drive-In six years ago, becoming the seventh owners going back to the originals, Andy and Lillian Taffeiren, who created Andy's Drive-In from a former gas station located in Andy's Corners, north of Langton on Hwy 59.
"We changed the indoor part to a retro '50s diner, with seating."
Earlier customers were served exclusively through a front window, drive-in style.
"This extends our season," said Michele, nodding to the two-room seating area, liberally decorated with Coca-Cola artwork, and a menu that includes hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, milkshakes and ice cream. "We're open March to mid-November... seven days a week."
