The deadline is fast approaching for graduating high school students to apply for the 2015 Leighton and Betty Brown Conservation Scholarship.

Applications are being accepted by the Long Point Region Conservation Authority (LPRCA) until Friday, June 19. One scholarship, with a cash value of $1,000 will be awarded in 2015.

Students who are continuing their post secondary studies in a conservation field (agriculture, biology, ecology, forestry, fish and wildlife, geography, etc) and who currently live within the boundaries of the Long Point Region Conservation Authority are eligible.

The Conservation Scholarship is presented by the LPRCA with the Lee Brown Marsh Management Committee to help nurture the next generation of conservationists.

“The scholarship is our way to assist in the education of tomorrow’s conservationists and to encourage young people to take an active role in initiatives that help build a healthy and resilient watershed,” said Tom Haskett, chair of the Lee Brown Marsh Management Committee, in a media release.

Application for the scholarship can be obtained from area high schools – including Glendale HS – by contacting the LPRCA at 519-842-4242; or by visiting the conservation authority’s website at www.lprca.on.ca.

The scholarship has been awarded in honour of Leighton Brown, former Marsh Manager, and his wife Betty, since 2006. It is funded through a trust fund established through donations from individuals who hunt at Lee Brown Marsh in recognition of Leighton’s many years of service at the Marsh.
