Norwich Lawn Bowling Club recruits new players in Tillsonburg

Linda Hawken - Norwich Lawn Bowling Club

On Saturday, May 9 members of Norwich Lawn Bowling Club set up a display in The Tillsonburg Town Centre, hoping to entice mall shoppers to come out and enjoy this sport.

On display were sets of different-sized lawn bowls, the mat and jack used in the game, as well as aids for those with back or knee disabilities. Several club members who had to retire from the sport in recent years have been able to rejoin thanks to the introduction of these aids and are doing very well with them.

Running on a member's laptop computer was recorded coverage of a championship lawn bowling match from England which enabled spectators to see just how the game is played.

Lawn bowling is a sport for all ages, from 10 to 80 and more, is not dependent on strength and provides light exercise while enjoying the warm summer weather. Men and women compete equally and playing formats range from teams of four, three or two and singles.

Norwich LBC will hold two Open Houses this month on Tuesday, May 19 at 2 p.m. and on Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. to accommodate those who work during the day. Free instruction will be given at both sessions, followed by light refreshments. Various sizes of lawn bowls will be available to use while you try and, should you decide to join the club, to use for a small fee.

During the summer lawn bowling season, jitneys (social lawn bowling games) will take place on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. (changing to 10 a.m. in June) and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. There are no set teams, you just turn up and are placed in a team. This ensures a good mix for teams and allows new members to get to know each other and returning members.

For more information about the club or lawn bowling in general, call club president Kathleen Welch at 519-863-5635 or visit the club's website at www.norwichlawnbowling.ca.
