20,000 chocolate eggs distributed Saturday

Earlier in the week, organizers of the annual Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club Easter Egg Hunt knew they could expect any type of weather Saturday morning – rain, shine, or even snow.

They dodged the snow and got the shine, although temperatures were cooler than last year's Easter Egg Hunt at Memorial Park.

"Kids were wearing shorts last year," noted Kinsmen organizer Walter Ellenberger. "But it didn't rain... and no snow, so it's not too bad today."

In total the children collected almost 20,000 gold, green and blue foil-wrapped chocolate Easter eggs 'hidden' in three separate age-group areas – five-and-under, 6-9 and 10-12 – and in gift bags given out by A&W Tillsonburg, which included A&W coupons, root beer suckers, and Kinsmen-supplied chocolate eggs.

"This way everybody gets eggs – even if they come late," said Ellenberger.

There were also three plastic eggs turned in for special prizes supplied by sponsor Coward PharmaChoice, which were won by Evelyn Mitchell (10-12), Maverick Weil (0-5) and Grace Froats (6-9).

"A lot of Easter Eggs," Ellenberger nodded.

"Counting all the parents, I'd say we had 300 people here at least."

Donations for the Helping Hand Food Bank were gratefully accepted by the Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club, 326 pounds of food in total, in addition to nearly $150 in cash donations.

The Tillsonburg Kinette Club raised money by selling hot dogs, chips and water at the event.
