Two Cents Worth

Well, Mother Nature has been pulling some old-fashioned April Fool’s pranks on us.

Everyone, including me, has been complaining of the cold, the damp, the wind, the snow, the freezing rain or whatever weather seems to befall us. The odd glimpse of sunshine is so welcome and warming but doesn’t seem to be enough to get us out of our weather critique.

Easter is this weekend so can spring weather be far off? Crocuses and hyacinths, tulips and daffodils will soon be up and making us all feel ready for summer.

And too the onslaught of yard work. Picking up twigs and branches, raking, weeding, cutting back perennials, adding more mulch, planting and on and on and on. I need a nap already. It will all be worth it in a few short weeks and we will have forgot about the winter and on to complaining about the weeds, grass cutting, the heat and on and on and on.

Easter is a time for family. Many, who don’t usually have the urge, will feel the need to attend a church service pledging to do better from now on and praying for decent weather. We gather our family close. Some have elaborate egg hunts and games for the children along with lovingly appreciated visits with seldom seen relatives. The guys hang around outside while the children run and jump releasing the long pent up winter energy. Women gather in the kitchen laughing, talking and catching up while all the work that goes into making a huge and perfect dinner is prepared. Each is eager to help and to share. Most of the niggly, real or imagined slights and peeves are put away and everyone is joyful.

It is a time as important as Christmas but without all the expense and anxiety of gifting, everyone can relax and honour the true connection with loved ones and individual spiritual links.

Not being a special occasion decorator you won’t find sparkly eggs, fluffy bunnies or endearing chicks sprinkled all over in my house. Had dinner with a friend last week and she had the most beautiful baskets of glittering, inedible eggs and such throughout her home. It was delightful and wondrous but didn’t me get inspired to do the same. Just don’t have it in me, but I do love the chocolate part so I don’t even do that anymore because I know I would eat it all in no time.

Take the time to really enjoy all the marvelous things this time of year brings with it. Spend loving time with your family and friends. Don’t eat too much but appreciate all the hard work that goes into these festivities. Lift a glass to toast those who made it all possible.

I wish all of you a very blessed, joyful Easter.
