Oxford County Public Health launches smile campaign

Ready, set, smile.

Oxford County Public Health is launching its second annual smile campaign in honour of oral health month.

During the month of April and into May, residents are encouraged to take a photo with a red-lipped smile prop and post it to the campaign Facebook page.

It’s a contest to encourage proper oral health habits.

“We brought this social media contest back for a second year after we saw that using humour and fun to promote oral health was both effective and engaging,” said Susan MacIsaac, manager of health promotion.

There are three easy and simple ways to practice great oral hygiene.

Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day, reduce or eliminate sugary snacks and drinks, and visit the dentist as often as possible.

The social media photo contest will end on May 18, and all smile-happy participants will be entered to win a prize.

The smile campaign was born out of the ‘National Smile Month’ started by the British Dental Association. Oxford County Public Health was the first Canadian health unit to jump onboard with an oral health month.

“Maintaining healthy teeth and gums really is one of the most important things you can do for your health so we encourage everyone to participate again,” MacIsaac said.
