International Women's Day was celebrated at Indigo Lounge and Cafe Eatery last Saturday in Tillsonburg.

Inspiring women were nominated for economic, political and social achievements, and throughout the day achievements from the past, present – and future – were recognized with free coffee/tea and 'You're beautiful – pass it on' T-shirt.

"I brought my daughter today," said Carrianne Hall. "I want to show her that she can be her own individual, and just to be proud of herself. "It's great to be around other like-minded women. We want to give back to the community and it's great that someone is taking the time to acknowledge that. I think it's fantastic that Kelly's (Spencer) grabbed hold of that."

"It was very inspiring," said Cassidy Adcock, 16, who said it was a good mother-daughter bonding event. "And I think more women should be recognized."

Spencer called it a campaign of honour and love.

"It was really fun seeing all the best friends and mom's and daughters come in, celebrating it, and putting on their shirts while they had their breakfast," said Spencer. "It was anytime during the day, we did free coffee and tea for all women, and the free T-shirts."

Spencer, inspired after reading an article on International Women's Day, set up a Facebook page for people to nominate women in the community to be recognized, and through the weeks leading up to Saturday's celebration they were able to read the nominations and enjoy the picture.

"I just thought what a great opportunity for people in Tillsonburg..." said Spencer. "It was a lot of fun. I enjoy these kind of events where the whole purpose is to just celebrate each other."

Through the day, Spencer estimated at least 50 women joined in the celebration.

"We had extra people come to our classes this morning. One girl brought her sister from out of town, another brought a friend from out of town. And spent some quality time together.

"I think it's really important to express those blessings that we have in our life. I think so often they go unspoken."
