Acrobatic U14 goalie saves the day

Tillsonburg's U14 Twisters avenged an earlier loss to London to win their division at the annual Tillsonburg Ringette TwisterFest tournament last Sunday.

The Oxford Source for Sports U14s pushed ahead 3-1 with a pair of second-period goals by Emily Patterson and Tishara Loucks. But London, who had defeated the Twisters in the round-robin, carried the play down the stretch.

"They (London) have a lot of skill and I think they had some momentum," said Source for Sports coach Ryan Thomson.

But the Twisters never lost confidence.

"First of all, we have a goalie that is unreal," said Thomson, with a shout out to netminder Kendyl MacIntyre who was Tillsonburg's game MVP. "She's like an acrobat back there. In the first part of the season she was a large part, single-handedly, the reason why we were winning games.

"And second, we trust our kids. We work on a lot of things and we trust our kids."

In six matches against London, Thomson said they've come out with a win and tie.

"We asked the kids if they were comfortable with who was on the ice and they all said yes, and I was happy with that, because we win together and we lose together."

Not only did the Twisters withstand the London late 'storm', they came back to score a fourth goal with only one second on the clock.

"I didn't even see it, I was too happy," Thomson laughed. "I was congratulating the players."

What Thomson missed was Kristin Coffin, assisted by Alivia Chanyi, icing the championship cake.

"We had a game Friday (against London) where we scored two goals that were disallowed in the last 40 seconds, and we lost by one," said Thomson. "There was two seconds left on the clock when the second goal was disallowed. A crease violation on the last one... and the one before that was a shot-clock violation."

Tillsonburg reached the gold medal game with back-to-back 7-1 wins over a young Elora-Fergus team.

"They (London) beat us in the London tournament, so this is payback," said Thomson. "We finally beat them."

The Twisters have just started the second half of their Western Region ringette season, and have about 8-9 games remaining.

"We've got a Niagara Falls tournament in the beginning of March – we're defending champs in Niagara Falls. And our season wraps up at Regionals in Guelph."
