TORONTOEven among the dozens of outlandish outfits donned during the Miss Universe pageant’s national costume contents, Miss Universe Canada sticks out. Literally.
Our nation’s contestant, and former SUNshine Girl, Chanel Beckenlehner, 26, took to the stage in Miami in an elaborate hockey-themed costume — complete with hockey stick wings, a Stanley Cup hat and a working scoreboard — albeit it with a questionable 20-14 tally.
The costume is supposed to represent a key element from each contestant’s represented countries.
Other costumes included a revealing adaptation of the Queen’s Guard uniform on Miss Great Britain and an outfit inspired by the Byzantine era on Miss Russia.
Beckenlehner — a native of Caledon and a University of Toronto grad — was a SUNshine Girl in May, shortly after she was crowned Miss Universe Canada.
“The opportunities we have in Canada I want to share and give to other kids in the world,” Beckenlehner told the Toronto Sun at the time.
The final night for this year’s Miss Universe competition is Jan. 25.
