Port Burwell Periscope Playhouse presents The Cemetery Club

October is the perfect time to visit the cemetery – The Cemetery Club, that is, a play presented this month by the Port Burwell Periscope Playhouse at St. Paul's United Church, Port Burwell.

The Cemetery Club is the third and final show of the Periscope Playhouse's 2014 season, though improvisation workshops and murder mysteries will continue through the winter.

A romantic comedy by Ivan Menchell with themes of remembrance and hope, The Cemetery Club is both funny and poignant. Set in New York City, it describes three Jewish widows who visit their husbands' graves together monthly, trying to decide whether to seek new love. The widows, bosom buddies with love/hate relationships for years, have very different attitudes: Lucille the flirt, Ida the romantic, and Doris the devoted. Enter Sam. Then enter the outsider, Mildred.

Director Jeff Rogers is delighted with the emotional strength brought to the story by the cast: newcomers Colleen Marlin, Gordon Walker, and Lena Foris playing Ida, Sam and Mildred, veteran Marion Rogers as Lucille, and veteran but new-to-the-Periscope Marilyn Baron as Doris.

Show dates and times at St. Paul's United Church (42 Erieus Street, Port Burwell) are: Oct. 16, 8 p.m. preview/gala by donation; Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18 and 24-25 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday matinees, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available at 519-874-4026, 226-271-3815, online or at various establishments in Port Burwell.
