TIFF films come to Tillsonburg

The stars have been gathering in Toronto (Sept. 4-14) for the annual international film festival, and as a tribute to TIFF, Broadway Cinemas in Tillsonburg proudly presents three upcoming TIFF films for Fall 2014.

On Sunday, Sept. 21 and Monday, Sept. 22, The Grand Seduction is featured. The tiny community of Tickle Head, Newfoundland is trying to boost its economy by landing a new factory. Problem is, in order to do so they must have a resident doctor. Hilarity ensues as they seek to woo a young male doctor through a variety of hijinks, humour and deception – possible only in an 'outport.' Well known Canadian actor Gordon Pinsent joins Taylor Kitsch and Brendan Gleeson in this rollicking comedy.

Show times are Sunday at 4 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m.

Oct. 26 and 27 will feature the film Tracks. Patrons will be treated to amazing cinematography of one women's 1,700 km trek across the barren outback of Western Australia. Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver and Emma Booth.

Broadway Cinema's final TIFF selection for 2014 is Woody Allen's latest film, Magic in the Moonlight. In over 40 feature films, Woody Allen has shown a flair for unique characters, entertaining dialogue, and confounding situations.

Since purchasing Broadway Cinemas in 2013, owners Kent and Cindy Rapley have undertaken extensive improvements. All theatres have state of the art digital picture and sound, and new screen for the sharpest possible image. In Spring 2014, all new seats were installed, and handicap seating was expanded in each theatre.

Tickets remain very reasonably priced. TIFF films are $10 each (adult admission to regular movies is $8, and $6 for children, and Tuesday nights are $5 for everyone).

"They say all the stars like to come to Toronto," said Jim Carroll, noting TIFF is expected to bring $190 million into Toronto. "And they (TIFF) seem to have done a really good job of picking Oscar contenders."

A total of 393 films were scheduled to be shown at the festival this year, including 143 world premieres.

"The TIFF website (tiff.net) lists all the movies and if there's a trailer, you can click on it and watch the trailer," said Carroll.

What Kent and Cindy Rapley want to do, said Carroll, is bring TIFF to Tillsonburg – on a smaller scale.

"The September show – The Grand Seduction – is a great one. It's really funny. Tracks is based on a true story – a woman literally treks across Western Australia with three or four camels and a dog. It's just stunning, the photography, and on a big screen things just look so much more amazing. The other one is typical Woody Allen, a bit of a love story.

"I really think The Grand Seduction will do well.

"All three have been shown at TIFF. Some TIFF movies we can't get the rights to because a studio's taken them, so we have to go through the studio. Sometimes we will, sometimes not. TIFF puts out an online catalogue... and there's probably about 100 cinemas across Ontario where they are shown."
