Tillsonburg's Purina Walk for Dog Guides set for July 12

Article content

Local community residents, friends, family members, dog lovers and people who are willing to help will gather at the Tillsonburg fairgrounds (Memorial Park) on Saturday, July 12 at 9 a.m. for the Purina Walk for Guide Dogs.

Now in its 29th year, the Walk for Guide Dogs attracts thousands of people each year from across Canada to raise donations in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, a national organization that trains dog guides to assist Canadians with disabilities.

"It's really heart-warming to see the support the Town of Tillsonburg and the people in and around the community have shown," said Terry Fleming, one of the Tillsonburg event organizers.

"With help from the folks in our community, we will be raising money to help Canadians with disabilities achieve or maintain a safe, independent lifestyle and these amazing guide dogs will be provided to recipients at no cost."

Organization of the local Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides is spearheaded by the Tillsonburg Lions Club in conjunction with the Town of Tillsonburg.

Participation is open to everyone and there is no fee to register. You can find local walk information, register and obtain donation forms at www.purinawalkfordogguides.com.

Pet retailers, vet clinics, and other retailers have donation forms available.

Lions Foundation of Canada has been training dog guides to serve the needs of Canadians with visual, hearing, and autism assistance since 1983. While the cost of placing and training a dog guide is approximately $25,000, each eligible candidate is provided a dog guide – including all required training, travel and accommodation at no charge.

The LFC Purina Walk for Dog Guides is an opportunity for not only the Lions, but all local residents and businesses to get involved in a worthwhile and needed project.

With the support of Purina, 100 per cent of the proceeds from all walks go directly toward the raising and training of dog guides. Since 9183, they have provided all the necessary food for Lions Foundation of Canada's puppies and dog guides in training.
