THE WORLD IS A STAGE - LAUREL BEECHEY

Smack your lips, for it is time for a Traditional English Cream Tea!

Ah, I remember when I was first in England years ago and happened upon a Devon Cream Tea; it was a delectable treasure. About the closest Cream Tea taste sensation I am going to get with out going back to England, will be Wednesday, June 25th at St. John’s Anglican Church (corner of Bidwell & Ridout) from 1 to 3 p.m.

Think about it… homemade scones, strawberry jam and real clotted cream! No whip cream or cool whip here; no, this is a real English tea! Now if you have a gluten problem, not to worry, they will have gluten free scones available for you. Tickets are $6 at the door, and proceeds to various outreach projects at the church.

Now many people like to get gussied up for a Cream Tea and I must admit it does your heart good to see a man in a kilt at these do’s, but men, you don’t have to wear a kilt, and ladies you don’t have to wear gloves and a hat, you only need to come and enjoy!

There will be a little twist to the event as they are allowing my mom, Laurel Turner, to show and sell a few of her oil paintings at the tea. Mom recently had an Art Show and Sale, at St. John’s which was mutually beneficial to both the church and mom. As she likes to say, she is now in her 90th year wanted to find good homes for the many oil paintings she had scattered and stacked around the house, treasures from a lifetime of painting. The sale went very well and all those proceeds were donated to St. John’s upcoming renovations, however, not all the paintings were sold. Mom was invited to bring the remainder to show and sell, at this tea. All the proceeds from the paintings will again go to the Kindle The Flame renovations.

The second event I would like mention, is from a proud father, who sent an email out to friends, informing us that his son Stephen's young adult choir from Toronto will be presenting a concert at St. Paul's Church United Church (88 Bidwell Street) here in Tillsonburg, on Friday, June 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Well, that was really nice, but he didn’t quite tell enough, so I went scouting around the internet to find out more about this concert.

It is amazing what you can find with a date and a place, and so I discovered that Matt Scholtz was talking about the Univox Choir, from Toronto who are returning again this year. Their website tells how this group was put together better than I can: “Univox is a mixed-voice community choir for young adults with relationship building, social responsibility and musical excellence at its core. It serves the Bloordale community and the City of Toronto by offering spirited performances of choral music, both old and new. Performed works are primarily a cappella and span a wide range of the choral spectrum; Renaissance madrigals and motets, choral classics, modern composition, spirituals, and international folk songs. We also have a composer-in-residence program and are proud to première work from local talent.

“The singers come from a diverse range of musical backgrounds; most have sung in choirs at different times during their education. Univox aims to fill the niche for young adults who wish to continue to have a rewarding choral experience with others in their age group.”

Now, I also discovered the cost of this concert is $15, although I did not find out what the proceeds are going for, but I do know that St. Paul’s is always busy in public ministry, like the Community Kitchen, where they and other churches prepare meals for our neighbours who have much less than we do.

Univox uses their group as a vehicle to improve their member’s quality of life which teams up well with the work at St. Paul’s.

They feel: “Although music provides a deeply spiritual experience, it is not isolated to any one faith and encompasses all of humanity. We praise music with one voice, united in the spirit of truth, beauty and goodness. We use our voice as a vehicle for the improvement of the quality of life for ourselves and those around us, touching and opening the hearts of our listeners and overcoming the obstacles that separate us.”

June is packed full of fundraisers, concerts, teas, festivals, relays, air shows, WWII anniversaries and just about anything else you can think of. Please read the What’s Happening section of the Tillsonburg News for a better idea of what there is to do and enjoy it all.
