Poetry contest deadline extended to June 9

Greetings from the Tillsonburg Public Library!

We are excited to announce that the deadline for the 9th Annual Footprints in the Sand Poetry & Prose Contest has been extended. Submissions can now be dropped-off until Monday, June 9th at:

Annandale National Historic Site

Sears Tillsonburg

Station Arts Centre

Tillsonburg Public Library

Just a reminder that this year's theme is "My Town: A Reflection of 50 Years," and entries will be accepted for the following categories:

Elementary school poetry: Grades 1-4

Elementary school poetry: Grades 5-8

High school poetry: Grades 9-12

Adult poetry: Ages 18+

Adult prose (1000-2000) words: Ages 18+

Join us for the awarding of prizes on Saturday, June 14 at Annandale National Historic Site from 1-3 p.m. during Margaret Fishback Powers' book signing event.

Prizes (for each category)

1st Place: $100 and a signed special edition book

2nd Place: $50 and a signed special edition book

3rd Place: $25 and a 50th anniversary edition of her poem

Please pass this along along to any writers you think might be interested. This is a great opportunity to showcase our local talent.

What's Happening at the Library

Tales in the Tower

June 5th, 10:30-11:15 a.m. at Annandale National Historic Site

For kids ages 3-6 years and their caregivers

Join us for a 30 minute fairy tale story and snack time for kids. Caregivers can enjoy a snack and hearing about some of the latest releases available at the library. Cost: $5 per adult (kids are free).  Tickets are available at the Tillsonburg Library.

 

Lego Fest 2 at the Library!

June 9th, 1-3 p.m.

For kids ages 6-12

A Lego Creation Contest, Iron Chef-style competitions, the Lego Mindstorm and more! Join us for a great afternoon at the library. Registration starts May 20 and spaces are limited.  Phone 519-842-5571 to save your spot!

 

“Once Upon a Turtle” Writing Contest for Kids

Children ages 6-12 are invited to write a short story or home-made picture book with a turtle theme.  Prizes for best short story and best picture book, and winners will read their stories at Annandale House as part of Turtlefest celebrations on June 14. Submit your story or picture book at the library or by email (send to bstark@ocl.net) by Thursday June 12, 8:30 p.m.

“My Tillsonburg” Writing Contest for Teens

Teens ages 13-17: We’re inviting you to submit a short story or poem about your experiences growing up in Tillsonburg, or about what Tillsonburg means to you.  Win a $25 Gift card to Chapters, read your story/poem on the lawn of Annandale House as part of the Turtlefest celebrations on June 14.  Submit your story or poem at the library or by email (send to bstark@ocl.net) by Thursday June 12, 8:30pm. 

 

Stress Busters for Teens

June 21, 1-4 p.m.

For teens ages 13-17

Yoga, tai-chi, nail art, drawing/painting and more from 2-3 p.m.; a funny movie about ditching school starring Matthew Broderick follows.  Contact the library at 519-842-5571 to register.

 

VON SMART Exercise for Seniors

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1-2 p.m.

Tillsonburg Library Program Room

Exercise in a controlled environment under the guidance of specially trained VON staff and volunteers.  This is an excellent option for those with mobility issues who are looking for a gentle exercise program.  This is a free drop-in program. 

 

Adult Book Club

Last Tuesday of the Month, 7-8 p.m.

Join us for exciting discussions on fascinating books at the Tillsonburg Library's Adult Book Club meeting! June's book is Population: 485 by Michael Perry.  Pick-up your copy at the service desk starting June 1st and come in to chat about it on Tuesday, June 24.  Spaces are limited.  Contact the library for more information at 519-842-5571.
