'Frozen' Movie Day for local Guiding groups

Article content

Considering the winter we've just experienced, Tillsonburg's Guiding groups recently held a very appropriate Thinking Day.

"We watched one movie with the girls... Frozen," said Sparks leader Rene Fett. "About 50 girls, I'd say, and they were really excited. We had treats – chips, popcorn that we made from a popcorn-making machine, candy and juice. After the chips, they shrunk the bag down to make a hat craft for the girls. Leaders Carrie McMillan and Serena Vandenbrink were the two that planned and executed it.

"I just showed up and made the popcorn," Fett added with a laugh.

For Girls Guides of Canada, Thinking Day is held annually in honour of the founders of Scouting and Girl Guides, Lord Robert Baden-Powell and his wife Olave Baden-Powell, who shared a Feb. 22 birth date.

Lord Baden-Powell's younger sister Agnes and his wife Olave are recognized as the founders of the Girl Guide movement. It was Agnes who wrote the first handbook for Girl Guides.

"On Thinking Day, we're celebrating them (the founders) in any way, shape or form," said Fett. "We thought a Movie Day was a good idea to bring all the units in Tillsonburg together – a bridging event for the Sparks, the Brownies, both Girl Guide units, and the Pathfinders.

"I would say the local groups are doing really well – the girls really enjoy it," she said. "We are hoping to have some more Sparks and more Brownies. And we're looking for more volunteer leaders as well."

Thinking Day is celebrated in many different ways across the world.

"Some people hold festivals, some have parties at the World Centres," said Fett, noting the four Guiding World Centres are located in Switzerland, Mexico, England and India.

On Sunday the 23rd, some of the local Guides and Scouts also participated in a service at St. Paul's United Church, part of the Feb. 15-23 Scout-Guide Week.

The Girl Guide season traditionally runs from September until June, which includes a big year-end camp in June. In May, local Guiding groups annually participate in the Keep Tillsonburg Beautiful Day cleanup.

GIRL GUIDE COOKIES

On Saturday, April 12, Tillsonburg Guiding units will be selling Girl Guide Cookies at The Town Centre mall on Broadway.

"It's national Guide Guide Cookie selling day," said Fett, looking forward to the annual fundraiser. "The Sparks and Brownies, for sure, will be in the mall on April 12th."

Guiding groups will be at the mall selling cookies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 12th.
