Article content

A free March Break drama and history camp is being offered by Robin Barker-James of the Findley Living History Site. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, March 10 to Friday, March 14. Youths aged 10 to 16 who are interested in drama are welcome.

The camp’s purpose is a week-long script workshop on the new play: The Last Trench Fighter: 1914, scheduled to go into rehearsals in June and to be performed at the Barker-James farm during the last week of August and first two weeks of September. The play chronicles key events in the first year of The Great War, including its causes, the invasion of Belgium, Canada’s initial response, troop training, the overseas journey and the Christmas truce of 1914. The play and subsequent chapters thereof, are part of the Oxford Remembers Program commemorating the 100th anniversaries of the war’s four years.

The camp will use script from the play to work on key drama methods including blocking, choreography, voice work, combat stunts and more; along with drama games and exercises. Videos, documents, first-hand accounts and artifacts will be incorporated into the camp, as well as props and costumes.

Robin Barker-James will act as instructor and unofficial recruiter for youths interested in taking part in the play’s production as members of crew or an anticipated 40-50-member cast, of which a third is currently in place.

Participants are required to bring their own lunch, but the camp itself is free, although donations will be accepted. Those interested in additional information or registering for a limited amount of spaces are invited to call 519-688-0066.
